‘God doesn’t call the qualified, God qualifies the called’
I’m not great at being injured – ask Jane! My sprained ankle has made me have those familiar feelings of not being ‘up to the job’.
Folk have been so understanding and kind – but the feeling lingers…
Of course, we all know that God’s strength is made perfect in our human weakness –
a message powerfully brought home in Paul’s letter to that overly enthusiastic ‘upstart’ church in Corinth:
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
I need to hear it again…
This Sunday we celebrate those two great pillars of the ‘birthing’ church – Peter and Paul, Apostles.
We see in their lives and indeed those of Jesus earliest disciples, that God isn’t overly concerned with what we can or can’t do –
if God calls us God will, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, equip us to fulfil ‘just as we are’ God’s purposes of love and the building up God’s kingdom –
and God is calling us.
We can all be encouraged by this and by remembering those who have answered the particular call to be made Deacon
or ordained into Priestly ministry today.

In faith, hope and love
Jonathan
Rector of Storrington
